PHOTO BY ROB BENCHLEY While the Nantucket boys lacrosse team was getting trounced in Falmouth 13-5, the girls on their home field were losing 14-5 to Cohasset.

It was a day that both Nantucket teams wished the cold and windy conditions had cancelled the boats.

The Nantucket boys varsity team lead early 3-2 and was still in the game until the half, only down 5-4. In the second half, things fell apart for Nantucket which allowed Falmouth to rack up eight goals to Nantucket’s one. Nantucket lost the ground ball battle only capturing 20 to the Clippers’ 37.

The Lady Whalers’ lack of consistency gave Cohasset openings. Nantucket would play well for a few minutes then stumble.

The girls varsity team will travel to New Bedford on Thursday, while the boys varsity team will host their own home opener against New Bedford at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams will be home on Saturday with the girls starting the day at 1:30 p.m. against the Purple Grapes from Martha’s Vineyard, followed by the boys varsity lacrosse at 3 p.m. The squads then face a long travel spell until the boys are home on April 15 and the girls are home on the 17.
